Lesson 10.1 · NCLEX Strategy and Test Day Prep
Understanding the NCLEX exam
Must-know rules
- CAT adapts to YOU. Answer correctly → harder question. Answer incorrectly → easier question. The algorithm continuously recalculates your ability estimate after every response.
- The exam stops at 95% confidence. When the computer is 95% sure you're above or below the passing standard, it stops: whether that's at question 85 or 150.
- 85–150 questions, 5 hours total. Time includes breaks. Must complete minimum 85 questions or automatic fail. Budget ~1.5–2 min per question.
- ~15 pretest items are unscored. You can't identify them. Treat every question as scored. If you encounter something bizarre, it might be a pilot item: don't let it shake you.
- Management of Care + Pharmacology = ~34–40% of the exam. These are the two largest content areas. Master them first for maximum impact.
- Item type ≠ difficulty. SATA, MC, matrix, ordering: all appear at every difficulty level. Getting SATA doesn't mean you're passing. Getting MC doesn't mean you're failing.
- The exam is DESIGNED to feel hard. CAT pushes you to your ceiling. You'll feel uncertain, challenged, and possibly defeated.
- Focus on what you can control. Preparation, strategy, time management, breaks, mindset.

- You're SUPPOSED to get questions wrong. The algorithm pushes you to your ceiling.
- Question difficulty is invisible. You can't tell whether a question is "easy" or "hard"
- You can't go back. Once you submit an answer, it's locked.
- THE 95% CONFIDENCE RULE: HOW THE EXAM DECIDES TO STOP: The 95% confidence interval rule: After each question, the computer has an...
- EXAM COMPOSITION: WHAT'S ON THE NCLEX-RN: Content distribution (2023 NCLEX-RN Test Plan): • Management of Care

DOJO RULE
Respect the algorithm, but don't play it. Students waste enormous mental energy trying to "read" the CAT: "That question felt easy

- Total time: 5 hours. This includes everything: tutorial, breaks, and all questions.
- Average time per question: ~1.5–2 minutes. At 85 questions, that's ~2.5–3.5 hours of question time (with...
- Scheduled break: after question 85. You'll get an optional break after question 85 (and another after...
- No time per question limit. There's no per-question timer.
- Running out of time = the computer decides for you. If time expires, the computer uses your ability...

DOJO RULE
The exam is designed to make you feel like you're failing. The CAT algorithm adjusts to your level
FINAL DOJO RULE
Knowledge of the exam IS preparation for the exam. Understanding CAT doesn't earn you clinical knowledge, but it prevents the panic, myth-driven thinking
