Choosing the therapeutic response
Feelings Before Facts
- FeelAddress the emotion first: "You seem worried."
- OpenOpen-ended: how, what, tell me about, describe
- ReflectMirror feelings back, do not fix them
- SilenceSilence is an intervention: let them process
Pearl: The answer that names the feeling usually beats the one that gives information.
When you need it: A scared client asks, "Is this going to hurt?" right before a procedure.
The non-therapeutic traps
The 7 Conversation Blockers
- FFalse reassurance: "Don't worry"
- AAdvice: "You should..."
- W"Why" questions: they sound like blame
- CChanging the subject
- DDefending the provider or the staff
- MMinimizing feelings
- AApproval or disapproval
Pearl: If you see one of these in an option, cross it out.
When you need it: An answer choice starts with "Don't worry, your doctor is the best."
