The NCLEX-RN has 85 to 150 questions and a 5-hour time limit. The number you get depends on how you perform.
The numbers
| Minimum questions | 85 |
| Maximum questions | 150 |
| Unscored pretest questions | 15 (you cannot tell which) |
| Case studies | 3 scored, 6 questions each (18 total) |
| Time limit | 5 hours, including breaks |
| Optional breaks | Offered at about 2 hours and 3.5 hours |
Why the number changes
The exam stops based on one of three rules:
- 95% confidence rule: stops once it is clear you are above or below the passing standard. Most common.
- Maximum-length rule: if you are near the standard, it runs to 150 and your final ability estimate decides.
- Run-out-of-time rule: if time expires before the minimum, you fail. If you answered at least the minimum, all your answers are scored.
What it means for you
- Shutting off at 85 does not tell you anything by itself.
- Going to 150 is not an automatic fail.
- Pace yourself: about 1.5 to 2 minutes per question, more for case studies.
- Do not rush. Running out of time before 85 questions is an automatic fail.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the NCLEX-RN?
Between 85 and 150 questions. That includes 15 unscored pretest questions and three case studies of six questions each.
How long is the NCLEX?
You have up to 5 hours. That time includes the tutorial, sample items, and optional breaks.
Does getting 85 questions mean I passed?
No. The exam can end at 85 questions with either a pass or a fail. It stops early when the computer is 95 percent confident either way.
If I get 150 questions, did I fail?
Not necessarily. Reaching 150 means your ability was close to the passing standard. Your final ability estimate decides the result.
